The Hoodia gordonii plant achieved much recognition when an American news anchor and crew tried the plant themselves and reported its expected effect of appetite suppression. But before that, the history of Hoodia can be dated back early in the 1900s.
Anthropologists have discovered Hoodia in 1937 when they have observed that Kalahari Bushmen eating their stems to ward off their hunger and thirst during long hunting trips. In 1977, scientists at the South African Council for Scientific Research have isolated P57, the active ingredient in Hoodia responsible for its appetite suppressant effect. The compound is believed to stimulate the hypothalamus, the part of the brain that turns off hunger signals. You end up thinking you’re full even if you haven’t eaten. For this reason, hoodia became a popular ingredient in many weight loss products.

Hoodia in the Market

Hoodia is available in capsule, chewable tablets, syrup, tea, and powder forms. But because of the high cost of producing real Hoodia, a lot of weight loss products that claims to contain Hoodia are counterfeit or may be contaminated by other chemicals. It has been reported that as much as 80 percent of Hoodia gordonii supplements are not genuine or do not contain the ingredient at all. This could be very dangerous when taken as the chemical fillers may have a serious adverse effect that is normally not elicited from pure Hoodia. Therefore, consumers should be very cautious when purchasing Hoodia.

Misconceptions

Because of its capacity to bring about weight loss, there have been a lot of misconceptions regarding the effects of Hoodia in the body. Hoodia does not burn fat nor does it feed your muscle. There is not even a single evidence that tells us that the plant plays a role in fat burning. This supplement is simply a weight loss aid. By suppressing the satiety center of the brain, it will really help those who have a terrible attitude towards eating. However, it is not the magic diet pill that many have been looking for. Because if you really want to lose weight and keep it off, the best approach would still be living a healthy lifestyle and adapting to it for good.
