Portion control is one of the key success factors involved in losing weight.  However, controlling your portions is usually easier said than done.  One of the issues with portion control stem from the fact that our brain wants to eat every last bit of food on our plate.  Additionally, we have a tendency to fill up our entire plate with food.  As a result, downsizing the tools you use during your meals can have a significant impact on your ability to control portion sizes.

Use smaller plates and bowls.
Research shows that most people unconsciously fill up their plates with food.  By using smaller plates and bowls you can fill them up without consuming the extra calories associated with it.  The difference can be significant and result in eating as much as 50% fewer calories in a sitting.

Use smaller glasses.
If you have a tendency to drink soda or any drink aside from water in excess, purchasing a set of small glasses may be worthwhile.  Alcoholic beverages should especially be consumed in smaller portions due to the extra calories.

Use smaller utensils.
By using smaller utensils you will be forced to take smaller bites of your meal.  Smaller bites will lead to longer meals which can be beneficial for weight loss.  Our brains do not register that we are full until 20 minutes after we are satiated.  As a result, using smaller utensils will allow us to savor each bite and take more time with our meals.
